Simple seasonal prep tips to protect your home before winter

Whether you’re a first-time homeowner wondering where to start, or an experienced owner looking for a quick refresher, fall is the perfect time to give your home some extra attention. As the days get shorter and temperatures drop, tackling a few key maintenance tasks now can save you from bigger (and more expensive) problems once winter hits. Here’s a practical checklist to keep you on track:

1. Clean Out the Gutters

Leaves and debris pile up fast in the fall. If your gutters get clogged, water has nowhere to go and can cause damage to your roof, siding, or foundation. Clearing them now means you won’t be dealing with ice dams or leaks later.

2. Take a Look at Your Roof

Snow and ice can turn a small roof issue into a big one. Check for loose or missing shingles, damaged flashing, or anything else that doesn’t look right. If climbing a ladder isn’t your thing, it’s worth calling in a pro.

3. Seal Up Drafts

Walk around your home and check for gaps around windows, doors, and your foundation. Caulking or weatherstripping those spots will keep warm air in, cold air out, and may even cut down on heating costs.

4. Service Your Furnace

Nobody wants their furnace to quit in January. A quick tune-up in the fall keeps it running safely and efficiently. Plus, you’ll have peace of mind when the first cold snap arrives.

5. Protect Outdoor Plumbing

Turn off and drain outdoor taps and sprinkler lines before freezing weather sets in. Don’t forget to bring your hoses inside—this one small step saves you from cracked pipes and replacements later.

6. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

With furnaces running and windows closed, fall is the right time to make sure your detectors are working and the batteries are fresh.

7. Prep the Yard

Trim any dead or overhanging branches that could come down in a storm, rake leaves, and cover or bring in anything that won’t handle the winter well. Your yard will look tidier, and you’ll avoid damage when the snow comes.

Why It Matters

Seasonal maintenance keeps your home safe and comfortable—and it also helps protect your investment. Buyers notice when a home is well cared for, and regular upkeep can pay off down the road if you ever decide to sell.
